6 health benefits of sleep
As sleep is our business, especially ensuring that you get the best sleep possible, we know just how important it is - from helping you live longer, to improving performance.
Here we share the top 6 reasons why you should make sure you get a great night’s sleep….on a Komfi mattress of course!
1. Live longer
Research has consistently shown that the quality and quantity of sleep you get each night can have an impact on your health. Great sleep means you are less susceptible to serious conditions such as heart disease, obesity and high blood pressure. In fact people who sleep less than 7 hours a night on average are 3x more likely to get sick than those who average at least 8 hours.
2. Improve your memory
We’ve all had really vivid dreams, so it stands to reason that our minds are active in other ways whilst we’re asleep. According to research we continue to strengthen memories or practice skills we are trying to learn during our slumber. It’s also quite a well known technique to listen to audio CDs when asleep as an aid to revision. So if you’re trying to learn something new, get more sleep!
3. Curb your appetite
A lack of sleep or just sleeping poorly - maybe because you need a new mattress - can affect your weight. Sleeping less not only means that you’re more likely to reach for that high sugar drink or snack for a quick fix, but it can actually slow down your metabolism, meaning shifting those pounds is even harder!
4. Beauty sleep
There is a very good reason why this saying is true. While we sleep free radicals that are responsible for premature ageing are destroyed. So after a good night’s sleep we appear rejuvenated and refreshed. What’s more during deep sleep the proteins in our body are busy making new cells and repairing skin damage caused by everyday environment and stress.
5. Competitive edge
If you’re a competitive sportsperson, or just a keen health and fitness fan, then you can improve your performance with more sleep! A Stanford University study found that college football players who tried to sleep at least 10 hours a night, for seven to eight weeks, improved their average sprint time and had less daytime fatigue and more stamina. Similar results were also found in tennis players and swimmers.
6. Happy kids
Children typically tend to fight the urge to go to bed, but getting them to sleep isn’t just beneficial to the parent (for obvious reasons). A lack of sleep in children can lead to hyperactivity, lack of attention and impulsive behaviour. Temper tantrum anyone?!
So now you know how important getting enough sleep is, but it’s not just the quantity; it’s also the quality.
